Hey y’all! My name is Abby Wirthlin, and I am an Elementary Education major here at BYU. I absolutely love growing my passion for teaching here in the McKay School, and I am excited to help others grow their love for teaching as well!
I am from Houston, Texas! I am the oldest of three younger brothers, and I love doing anything outdoors! Whether it’s camping, hiking, playing tennis, swimming, boating, playing pickleball, skiing, or anything else, you’ll find me outdoors every chance I get. I took a break from school to serve a full-time mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Concepción, Chile. My mission transformed my testimony of the gospel and helped me grow my relationship with my Savior, Jesus Christ. I am happy to be back studying in the McKay School and to continue learning about my Savior as I follow our mission statement, “We strive to model the attributes of Jesus Christ, the Master Teacher, in helping their university experience, as they prepare to educate and serve with an eternal perspective.”
I have wanted to be a teacher ever since I was little, and I have had many experiences that have confirmed that teaching is something I want to do! I loved teaching on my mission, and I currently teach swim lessons and tutor as well. I have also enjoyed volunteering in classrooms, participating in youth mentoring programs, and substitute teaching in the Provo School District. Through each of these experiences, I have loved being able to connect with others, work with and serve them, and help them grow while also being challenged myself. These experiences have made me even more excited to become an elementary school teacher one day. I am grateful for the time I have now at BYU to learn and grow so that I can be the best teacher I can be for my future students.
