Why I Chose Education: Avery Jensen

Special Education

I didn't always know that I wanted to be a teacher. Growing up, I cycled through many different career options such as being a NICU nurse, a doctor, a therapist, and many more occupations that didn't really have anything to do with being an educator. Looking back, I realize that even though my career interests were constantly changing, there was always a common thread: I wanted to help people and make a meaningful difference in their lives.
Throughout my life, I have had many opportunities to work with students with special needs. In high school, I had the opportunity to be a peer tutor and participate in a club called CH Pals, where I advocated for students with special needs and helped them become more involved in school. This club had a huge impact on me and helped me discover my passion for working with students with diverse needs. I fell in love with creating opportunities for students to feel included, supported, and valued.
I specifically remember when I was in high school, I had the opportunity to work with a Special Education teacher, Jaqueline Sheppick. I saw how she made learning so fun and interactive for her students and how much progress her students made. I also saw her constantly advocating for her students. The difference she made in her students touched my heart.
Since then, I have continued to seek opportunities to work with students with special needs. I have babysat and tutored students with diverse needs and have also worked as a Registered Behavior Technician. I have loved each of these experiences and the opportunity they have given me to build relationships with students, support their individual needs, and help them succeed.

Studying education here at BYU has been the biggest blessing. It has drawn me to my Savior as I look to Him as my example of being a teacher who makes a difference. I love that Jesus Christ recognized people's potential before they recognized it in themselves. That is the kind of teacher I am striving to become, the kind of teacher who makes their students feel capable and valued.
