At the McKay School of Education, hands-on experience is one of the most valuable parts of becoming a teacher. Practicum, student teaching, and internships provide us the chance to apply classroom learning in real schools, work directly with students, and grow confidence in our teaching skills. These experiences can feel exciting, but also overwhelming at times. To help you succeed, we’ve gathered a list of resources and tips designed to support you every step of the way.

Resources

  • Mentor Teachers: Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Your mentor teacher is there to guide you and has lots of answers about their class.

  • Reflection Journals: Write down your observations, challenges, and successes. Reflecting on what went well and what didn't can help you know what to change for next time.

  • The UEN (Utah Education Network) offers endless resources for teachers and students in every subject for every grade level! Not only do they have lesson plan help, but they also have ideas for homework, online libraries, and opportunities for professional development. Their website is a super helpful resource for pretty much anything for teachers!

  • The BYU ARTS (Arts Reaching and Teaching in Schools) has partnered with the McKay School to improve arts education in schools. Their lesson plans include activities involving dance, music, drama, and more! This is a valuable resource for teachers of the arts. Need to spice up their normal classroom routines? This is the place!

  • The Education website has pretty much any printable you could ever dream of for every subject, PreK through 8th grade! Not only that, they have fun computer games that go along with them. Everything on this website directly correlates with the Common Core Standards, so they'll fit into your lesson plans perfectly!

Tips

  • Stay Organized: Keep a planner for deadlines, lesson plans, and reflections.

  • Ask for Feedback: Growth happens when you’re open to constructive input.

  • Practice Self-Care: Teaching is demanding, so make time for rest and exercise.

Whether you’re in your first practicum, teaching in a student teaching placement, or taking on the responsibility of an internship, remember you’re not alone. The McKay School is here to support you as you develop your teaching skills, confidence, and work experience.
