McKay Student Ambassador
Physical Education

Twice a year, the McKay School hosts an Inspired Learning Expo. The first Expo invites students to explore the research our professors are working on and discover ways to get involved. The second Expo gives students the chance to showcase the projects they’ve collaborated on with their professors. Our most recent Expo was held on September 18, and we asked a few students who attended to share their experiences.
Asey Dockstader- A senior studying Communication Disorders

What professors did you talk to?
"I talked to all the ComD professors! Dr. Nissan, Professor Schow, Professor Liu, Professor Stone, Dr. Bailey, Dr. Griffey"
What did you learn?
"I was able to meet and network with a new member of the ComD staff Dr. Hannah Griffey and learn about her research for BYU’s very first Aphasia day! I caught up with Dr. Bailey and asked him how his research has been progressing in his lab since I worked with him in the Winter 2024 semester."
Did you walk away with a job or an opportunity or suggestions for study abroad?
"I already had a spot in Dr. Nissen’s lab for this semester but I was able to solidify the timeline and manner of what I will be doing while at the event. I also already had a spot in BYU’s new hearing clinic the winter semester so I was able to discuss that opportunity further with professor Liu and professor stone. After learning about Dr. Griffey’s Aphasia day this April I am excited to volunteer my time during winter semester to help with the interworking of that event."

Kassia Khountham- A junior studying Special Education
Who did you talk to?
"I talked to Dr. Beth!"
What did you learn?
"I learned about the opportunities to do research and learn about new cultures. We talked about the impact they had on American Samoa and how the way they move and how they learn is so important to understand emotions and happiness. Looked like a special opportunity for students to take part in."
Did you walk away with a job or an opportunity or suggestions for study abroad?
"Yes, with lots of options, it was super cool to see all the different opportunities."
It’s never too late to get involved with the McKay School! Reach out to your professors to learn about the research they’re working on this semester and explore opportunities to participate. Be sure to watch for the next Inspired Learning Expo coming up during the Winter Semester.
