Do you feel like you're lacking purpose in your life as you navigate the endless pile of school assignments? BYU understands that this is a common struggle for students and has provided an easy, time-efficient opportunity to find greater meaning through service.

Service is one of the biggest things we can do to help ourselves and others feel closer to the Savior. One of the goals of BYU is to prepare students to "go forth to serve", and they supply many opportunities to do so during students' time on campus. Following are ways you can get involved in service projects in the McKay School, Y-serve, and BYU as a whole!

McKay School

We recently had a service project in the McKay School where we assembled school supplies kits for students in need. Students, faculty, and staff stopped by the McKay Commons to pack these bags and write fun notes to the kids the kits were going to. I even saw the Dean pop in to help out! While this service project is done, keep an eye out for more service opportunities in the McKay School as the 150th year of BYU rolls on!

Y-Serve

The Y-Serve Programs offer a range of ways to serve, and many of the projects go along well with education majors! When you get to the Y-serve Programs page, navigate to the left side of the screen. There you will find options to filter the programs into groups of people, ages, and times you would like to serve. There are programs for helping kids in the classroom, supporting early learning, teaching English, coaching, helping individuals with disabilities participate in the community, and teaching different subjects to kids and teens. You may just find a program full of people with your similar interests! Personally, I have participated in Adaptive Aquatics/Gym Kids. This program is easy to attend because it is on campus in the middle of the day! I had fun running around the gym with students from special education classes in local elementary schools. Soon, I plan to start attending Adaptive Institute. This program is held multiple times a week, so there should be a time for anyone who wants to attend! I am excited to get more involved with Y-Serve and hope to grow closer to the Spirit while making friends!

Campus-Wide Service Projects

Like I mentioned earlier, this is the 150th year of BYU! BYU wants every student to complete 150 hours of service each. While this may seem overwhelming, they are providing so many opportunities to serve on campus! Check out the BYU 150 page to learn more. Hope to see you all at these fun events!

As a busy college student, you may not feel like you have time to do anything besides homework, but I promise that prioritizing service will bring blessings into your life! Service helps us realize we are all going through hard times together. Choose a Y-serve activity to realize you're not alone in your trials. Go out of your way to attend service projects, or even just to do something nice for your roommate. Go forth to serve!
