Welcome to the BYU McKay School of Education! We’re so happy you’re here. Starting college can feel overwhelming at first, but one of the best ways to feel more at home is to get involved. There are so many opportunities throughout the year to connect with other students, find support, and just have some fun, so I wanted to share a few things to help you get started.

Welcome Back Gathering

One of the first events you won’t want to miss is the Welcome Back Gathering on September 4 at 11 a.m., hosted by the Belonging Leadership Team. It’s open to everyone, including freshmen, and it’s a super easy way to meet new people in the McKay School. Plus, they’ll be handing out popsicles and t-shirts, which is always a bonus.

Booths

Another simple way to get involved is to stop by the McKay School ambassador booth in the Wilk. We are there every week, and each time there’s a different game, treat, or activity. It’s low-key, fun, and a great place to ask questions if you’re curious about anything in the McKay School. The ambassadors are students just like you and are always happy to help.

McKay Commons

If you haven’t been to the McKay Commons yet, definitely check it out. It’s on the first floor of the McKay Building and is one of my favorite spots to study or hang out between classes. It also has something called the “Tool Box,” which is basically a mini makerspace. You can use a Cricut, 3D printer, laser cutter, sewing machine, pretty much anything you might want to create something for a future classroom. There are also events and service projects in the commons about once a month with treats and it is another good opportunity to meet other students.

Sip 'n' Study

Another fun activity in the Mckay School is Sip and Study. Every Thursday from 2 to 5pm (time may change so keep an eye out) you can stop by and get free soda and/or study help. It is a great place to study with other students and get a little treat.

Research

One thing I wish I’d known sooner was how open professors are to talking with students. Many of them are doing research and are excited when students want to get involved, even as freshmen. The Learning Expo is a great place to see what kind of research is happening in the McKay School and to start thinking about how you might want to join in. Even just stopping by a professor’s office after class can lead to cool opportunities later.

Mary Lou Fulton Lecture and Essay Contest

Another big event to look forward to is the Mary Lou Fulton Lecture and Essay Contest in February. If you’ve already been accepted into your program, you can submit an essay, but even if you’re not, you can still attend the lecture. It’s a great chance to hear from someone who’s doing incredible things in the world of education.

Stay in the Loop

Lastly, if you’re ever wondering what’s going on or what you might be missing, follow @byumckayschool on Instagram or Facebook. That’s where we post about upcoming events, giveaways, and cool things happening around the building. Or join our email list here. These are the easiest ways to stay in the loop!
