Get to Know Elementary Education Student Ambassador Dixon!

My name is Dixon Gerber, and I am studying elementary education! I'm also double minoring in teaching English language learners (TELL) and music and the arts integration. I was originally a civil engineering major, but I switched to elementary education after my mission. Since changing my major, I have felt like it was the best choice for me. Some of my all-time favorite teachers have been from classes for the elementary education major. I love to have fun and be spontaneous, especially in classes where we are moving around and being active.

I served my mission in the Houston, Texas Mission, speaking Spanish. I returned from my mission in May of 2021. I am the fourth of six children. I also have five nieces and nephews with one on the way! My dad and all of my siblings have served or will serve a Spanish speaking mission as well! Growing up, my dad was in the Army, so we moved every 2-4 years. I learned to love traveling and have been to Mexico, Puerto Rico, and Europe twice! My family was also very involved in sports and music growing up. I started both when I was about four years old. I started playing baseball, soccer, and basketball. I quit basketball after sixth grade and ran cross country during middle school. Though I don't count it as a sport, I also did marching band all four years of high school. I switched from baseball to tennis after my freshman year of high school. When I got to BYU, I met so many amazing people and they introduced me to playing ultimate frisbee, flag football, and volleyball. I still play volleyball recreationally and play for the BYU CHI Ultimate Frisbee team. I would love to coach ultimate frisbee in the future as well.

As a musician, I started playing piano when I was about four as well. I played piano as a chore through 4th grade. When I quit piano, my mom told me I could only do so if I did something else with music. I ended up joining band and playing trumpet. I played trumpet through the rest of my K-12 career. I started playing piano again during my sophomore year of high school. I also started to write my own music with an emphasis on lyrics. During my mission, I started to learn ukulele and guitar and started to write music with those instruments as well. I continue to improve my songwriting and have even released six songs under the name Gerbs! Currently, my most popular song is Be My Queen.

I am entering my fourth year as an elementary education major, starting practicum Fall of 2024. I'm beyond excited to start teaching. When I taught swim lessons, I loved to see the growth in my students. I look forward to see students learn and piece information together. I love to see the excitement students have for their hobbies and learning new things. I look forward to being a positive influence in the lives of my students and their families.
