Why I Chose Education

Choosing education is not a light choice. It’s the decision to shape futures, inspire minds, and make a lasting impact on the lives of others. In every classroom, every interaction, and every lesson taught, we have the opportunity to be part of something greater.

Read why our student ambassadors chose education!

Megan - Elementary Education

All throughout elementary school, I admired my teachers and wanted to be just like them. Each day after school, I would come home and "play" school in my basement. As I began to take career-related classes in high school, I fell even more in love with teaching and child development. After graduating high school, I decided to be a substitute teacher and my journey to becoming a teacher has progressed through the elementary education program in the BYU McKay School. One of my favorite things about teaching is how rewarding it is, especially when building relationships with students and seeing that lightbulb moment when they understand a concept. I graduate in April and cannot wait for my career in education!

Lauren - Early Childhood Education

I chose education because I want to make a difference in the lives of others. I have always loved little kids. When I had an opportunity to teach at the pre-school lab in my high school, I fell in love with every aspect of teaching. I have worked with kids who have a rough home life and felt like school was a safe place for them. I find it so fulfilling to be their friend and help them learn, grow, and discover their full potential. It allows me to teach God’s children and serve as Christ would.

Sarah- Special Education

I have seen so many teachers have a positive influence in the lives of kids. As a sibling of two autistic brothers, I spent a lot of time with them in their functional skills classes. I watched as their teachers helped them to do things I never thought they would accomplish. I want to make the kind of difference in the lives of kids that my brothers' teachers made in theirs.

Kamora- Physical Education

I chose to become a PE teacher not only becasue I think sports are fun, but because I know how important it is to be healthy. Our bodies are a gift from our Heavenly Father, and the opportunity to help others learn how to take care of their bodies -and enjoy doing it- really stood out to me.

Dixon- Elementary Education

I was originally a civil engineering major. After returning from my mission, I wasn't enjoying my classes and I needed a change. In an Elder's Quorum class, we were talking about where we turn for guidance. I have always had a special bond with my patriarchal blessing, which talked about my future studies and career. It says that I will choose a career that will allow me to make a difference in the lives of other people. I remembered my mom telling me that I would make a great elementary school teacher. I asked her what she thought about me switching my major to elementary education. She supported me in the decision. I also texted my dad, and he asked if I was sure. I prayed about it for a week, and it felt right so I made the change. When I question my decision to switch to education, I remember this experience and I know I am supported as I work to be an educator.
