Language Development Class
Here is what I have learned this week in my Language Development Class (ECE 355). I have loved this class and find what we are learning very interesting. We started learning about language development in infants and have worked our way up to kindergartners. It is fascinating to see how little kids are like sponges and absorb everything around them, especially language.
Importance of Play
This week we have focused on what language development looks like in a preschooler. We focus on identifying what is advanced or delayed and methods to help children who might be delayed. We focused a lot on how important play is because that is how young children learn. Having a dramatic play section in a preschool is great for language development as it gets children talking with one another and making up stories. Preschoolers learn and add 10-12 words daily to their vocabulary. At this stage, children are also learning how to use plural S and verb tense endings as well.
Research & Observation
We also had the opportunity to have a three-year-old come to our classroom and listen to their language development. We have had a 1-year-old and 2-year-old visit our class as well and these days are my favorite as we get to see and hear about what we are learning. Our professor will talk and play with the child while we observe. We take notes on what they say and how much we think they understand after we analyze as a class. I have loved this class and everything we have learned about so far.
