Choosing to be a Teacher

Choosing any career is a very important life choice. Choosing to be a teacher, however, is important for your future students as well. When you choose to be a teacher, you also choose to be a role model, a friend, a guide, a motivational speaker, a psychiatrist, and so much more. You will see students succeed and fail. You will see students give up and you will see them show unrelenting resilience. You will be surprised with how much they understand and wonder whether or not they really get what you are teaching. The importance of the choice to be a teacher cannot be understated.

You Can Shape The World

As a teacher, you will have an amazing opportunity to influence and shape the world. Within twenty years, after you start teaching, the students you taught will be making a difference in the world. They will have careers of their own. They will be business men and women. They will be construction workers. They will be teachers. They will be doctors. Who knows? Maybe a student you encouraged will end up finding a cure for cancer. You never know what they are capable of. They may or may not remember you, but you will definitely not forget them. You may not get any credit for encouraging them or challenging them to do better, but every day is important with these students. It can shape their future, thus shaping the world.

When I was in practicum last semester, I saw how much students truly love and adore their teachers. They want to be like you. They want to spend time with you. It was something so simple but made all the difference to those students. It frequently wasn't always when I was teaching that I had the biggest impact on their lives. It happened just from talking to them or spending time with them on the playground. By the time I was done with practicum, there were multiple students who cried because I was leaving. I had only been with them for a total of four weeks. Imagine the impact you can have on their lives over the course of a school year.

Being a Teacher Matters

There are limitless opportunities to change the lives of the rising generation as a teacher. Being a teacher, though not a glamorous career, changes lives. It shapes the future. Your decision to be a teacher cannot be understated. When you say that you're studying elementary education, people typically respond with one of two phrases, "aww that's so cute." or "you'd make a great elementary school teacher." They don't fully understand the impact you will have on the lives of others.
