As someone who recruits for the education majors, I often hear people say things along the lines of, "I've thought about teaching... after I do my other career." Other career? Not once has teaching struck me as a retirement plan. Teaching is not something you turn to when you're sick of your other job or when your plans fall through. Teaching is a fulfilling and important career in itself and needs to be seen as more than a backup plan.
Family Friendly Career Path
Many people worry about how they will raise a family while having a full-time career. If you are a teacher, you won't even have to think about it! When your kids are home, you'll be home. You'll have school breaks off (including the entire summer) alongside your children. Once your children are old enough to attend school, you won't have to find childcare, because your schedule will match theirs! This will allow you to spend the time needed with your children to build stronger bonds that will last their entire lives. This isn't appealing to people with family values. I don't know what is.
High Job Satisfaction
Teaching is all about helping others, which leaves you feeling great! Your work will make a difference. Teaching the next generation of leaders is a huge responsibility, and the world would fall apart if no one took it upon themselves. I don't know of many other jobs that will allow you to leave such a big impact with only a bachelor's degree.

Career Based on Holy Truths
Being at BYU, I've been taught to recognize patterns of Christlike attributes. Christ is the Master Teacher, so what better way to be like Him than to become a teacher yourself? He always administered to the one, cared for the children, and desired for those around Him to reach their fullest potential. I genuinely believe that helping others gain knowledge, which is the only thing a person can take to the next life, is the same as helping others prepare for the world to come.
Teaching is one of the most important jobs, yet many people see it as a secondary career. It has to be considered more than a retirement or backup plan. I've only skimmed the surface of why teaching is a fantastic career choice. I wish more people would see it for the wonder that it is!
