One of the questions we get asked most often is, "What if I want to teach in a state besides Utah?" Well, we've got you covered in this blog post! We're going to go over some basic teaching requirements for certain states and how that impacts transferring your teaching license. Let's dive in!
When you graduate from Brigham Young University with a teaching degree, you are licensed under the state of Utah to become a teacher. This degree transfers throughout the country, but different states may require further coursework or assessments.
For example, the state of California (traditionally the most difficult state to become licensed in) requires that teachers who got their license outside of California complete a skills assessment test, provide proof of 2-3 years of "successful teaching experience", and take a 6 credit course (unless already completed) on teaching English Language Learning students.
Another state, Idaho, only requires that teachers complete additional content assessments if needed (ex. did not complete those assessments in their home state).
The requirements are different for each state, making it imperative that teachers should be aware of the qualifications before seeking employment outside of Utah. The requirements for each state can be found at this website: https://www.ecs.org/teacher-license-reciprocity-state-profiles/
If you have any more questions about teaching out of state, set up an appointment to meet with a student ambassador here. We would love to chat!
