Education is an Eternal Principle

April 13, 2020

Here you are... a student at Brigham Young University. Your school is sponsored by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints so education obviously must be important, right? Well, what exactly have leaders of the Church said about education? What do the scriptures teach us?

"Seek ye diligently and teach one another words of wisdom; yea, seek ye out of the best books words of wisdom; seek learning, even by study and also by faith." (D&C 88:118)

“Your mind is precious! It is sacred. Therefore, the education of one’s mind is also sacred. Indeed, education is a religious responsibility."

--President Russell M. Nelson

“For members of the Church, education is not merely a good idea—it’s a commandment.”

--Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf

“It is so important that you young men and you young women get all of the education that you can... Education is the key which will unlock the door of opportunity for you. It is worth sacrificing for...My dear young brothers and sisters, take advantage of every educational opportunity that you can possibly afford, and you fathers and mothers, encourage your sons and daughters to gain an education, which will bless their lives.”

--President Gordon B. Hinckley

Alright, now we know education is important. But what about being a teacher specifically?

"...there is no greater call than to be an effective teacher."

--Elder M. Russell Ballard

"One of the greatest influences a person can have in this world is to influence a child."

--Sister Rosemary M. Wixom

"Clearly, those of us who have been entrusted with precious children have been given a sacred,

noble stewardship, for we are the ones God has appointed to encircle today's children with love and the fire of faith and an understanding of who they are."

--Elder M. Russell Ballard

"No greater responsibility can rest upon any man, than to be a teacher of God's children." --President David O. McKay

The McKay School of Education Mission Statement is as follows: "We strive to model the attributes of Jesus Christ, the Master Teacher, as we prepare professionals who educate with an eternal perspective." Does this match what the Church has taught about the importance of teaching? We sure think so!

We want to hear from you on this topic! Comment below on why you decided to be a teacher! How does this help you fulfill your responsibility here on earth? What are your thoughts on the connection between teaching and religion?
