Get to Know the McKay School

May 2, 2019

The McKay School of Education offers incredible opportunities to the students throughout their programs. It is a college that focuses on helping others and positively impacting communities. There is not only a focus on academics, but on how we can become, and help our future students become, the best people we possibly can. Overall, it's the best college on campus! Not that we're biased or anything....

The McKay school offers 5 majors:

  1. Communication Disorders

  2. Early Childhood Education (PreK- 3)

  3. Elementary Education (K-6)

  4. Physical Education Teaching/Coaching (K-12)

  5. Special Education (K-12)

What are the differences? What is offered in each program? How do I know if this major is for me?

Those are all great questions, and you should consider them as you read through the quick overview of the majors below!

Communication Disorders—The Communication Disorders program prepares students with a concrete foundation to pursue further education to become a speech language pathologist. Speech language pathologists work in education and health-care settings to help individuals with speech and language difficulties.

Elementary Education—The Elementary Education program prepares you to be a skilled educator in the areas of literacy, mathematics, language arts, science, and more, all while making a difference in young children’s lives by teaching the building blocks for knowledge and lifelong learning. Teaching elementary grades allows you to be the person who helps a student unlock their potential for learning and sets them on the path for future success.

Early Childhood Education—The Early Childhood Education program prepares students to teach preschool, kindergarten, and primary grades (1–3). It helps prospective teachers learn how to effectively apply teaching theories in the classroom to make learning fun and exciting by mastering principles of child development theory and psychology.

Physical Education Teaching/Coaching—The Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE) major is designed to provide you with the necessary content knowledge and instructional skills to become a certified physical educator and coach. You can do this by teaching healthy habits to ensure an active lifestyle! Throughout the program, you learn to perform a variety of sports, dance, and recreational activities, along with teaching methods courses that connect application to teaching.

Special Education—The Special Education program elevates the quality of life for children, youth, and adults by helping you learn how to empower students with the tools they need for success in education and beyond. You learn principles of psychology to modify behavior, use creative problem-solving to teach literacy skills in a new way, or teach necessary job skills. You will learn how to apply a variety of skills to work with diverse learners. It is never boring!
