New Year, New Us!

Updated: Jan 17, 2023

With the start of a new year and a new semester, the student ambassadors have done some reflecting on our academic goals for this semester. With many of us in the practicum stage of our major, our semesters can be stressful and overwhelming, and finding appropriate goals to keep us motivated is important! Here are our goals for this semester:

Alex: "In past semesters, I have realized that the way I start a semester truly reflects the outcome of it, so for this semester one of my goals is to start with organization. I have been using my planner to write down assignments and important due dates, which not only saves me a ton of time but also makes me feel more in control of what I have going on. This semester I am also striving to have a more positive outlook! I began my first practicum this semester and knew that it was a matter of time before I began to stress myself out with doubts about my capabilities, so learning to be more compassionate towards myself is an important goal!"

Bethany: "This year I'm striving to be better at giving myself grace. I have so many perfectionist tendencies that I want to be better at managing. Personally, I have made goals to begin each day with prayer, meditation, and scripture study; to be healthier about my social media consumption; and to make an effort to exercise more. At the close of each day, I want to be better at checking in with my mind and my body through journal writing and quiet reflection. I know that I feel better mentally, physically, and spiritually when I do these things. I hope that doing this will help me be better at managing self-expectations, and be more okay with failure and letting things go. I can't wait to see what 2023 brings!"

Elliot: "Being a student with learning disabilities, I find that setting measurable goals for the year that aren't overwhelming helps me to do my very best. For this winter semester, I am focusing on being more intentional in my studies. I want to make sure that while I am reading the text and taking notes on things that are important to remember. Another goal I have is to take notes on little things that teachers say in passing about how to set up a classroom or really any little tips and tricks they have. This fall I am doing my student teaching, which is kind of nerve-racking. My goal with that is to jump in and embrace that learning process. During that time I know that I will be challenged, but I hope to keep an eternal perspective and a positive attitude!"

Annie: "I always try to approach a new semester with a few strong goals and a brand-new notebook. Putting my goals down in writing makes a huge difference in my performance and just makes it more fun! This is my first semester in practicum so my goals look a little different, but are even more important! This semester I want to put a big emphasis on being on time. I often struggle with snoozing my alarm, which inevitably makes me late for class. With practicum, it is so important to be on time to your classes, so I am planning to work on that! Another goal I have for this semester is to have a positive attitude about correction. I struggle with receiving negative feedback, although I know that making mistakes and being corrected is the only way to get better. This semester I want to try to be more accepting of constructive criticism in order to become the best teacher I can be!"

We hope our goals inspire you all. If you have any questions or concerns about your semester goals, practicum, or just want to talk, schedule an appointment with a student ambassador here!
